Thesis from the field of Maltese Studies, taking up the issue of the condition of lexical borrowings in Maltese. It sets out in quantitative and qualitative examination of borrowings from European languages (mostly Italian and English) to the Maltese language, and at the same time, an analysis of the processes associated with borrowing to that language. The work contains a sample of synthetic presentation of the status of borrowed words in modern Maltese through analysis of the corpus of selected texts. It also moves through the problematic issue of positions of the Maltese language in the genealogical tree of languages.
